Mini Kid's Cabin Bedroom

Inspired by our three kids, we made this bedroom with a cabin bed, wooden train tracks and plenty of book storage. Is there actual room anywhere this cute? Not yet. It’s currently more of a blank canvas. Do they actually make their beds? Um, they are working on it. Are there really this many books in their actual room? So. Many. More. It would have taken us so long to make all of their actual books.

Room Details

CEILING LIGHTS: We’ve been testing out some battery-operated LED lighting—for this room we used 3D-printed scallop fixtures.

TOY HORSE: We 3D printed this

COPPER LANTERN: We got this here

BANNER: (Because we could all use a gentle reminder.) We made this with printed cotton canvas, a whittled-down toothpick and some twine.

BEDDING: This quilt was made by a good friend, who gifted it to me for my birthday one year.

SOCCER BALL: We couldn’t remember where this came from, but the kids reminded me that it was an a Home Depot craft project and the scale seemed close.

BOOK RACKS: The boys have similar ones in their full-sized bedroom, so we made mini replicas with 1/16” wood and painted them bright white.

HAMPER: Okay, this is meant to be a canvas laundry tote, but we actually mocked it up out of paper. The boys cackled with delight, as it looks so much like one of the three in their full-sized bedroom.

BEAR: We found this here

ACTIVITY SHEETS: Our 9-year-old spotted these little sample pages on the back of one of their old dot to dot books and trimmed them out for us.

BASKET: We 3D printed this

CRAFT SUPPLIES: Colored pencils from this Etsy shop, similar scissors found here, tape found here.

COMIC: Okay, this is pretty funny. Our 9-year old regularly writes and illustrates his own comic books. So our 7-year-old took it upon himself to replicate one of them in miniature to include in this scene.

WALL ART: We framed these tiny insect prints with 1/8” stained wood frames.

TRAIN TRACKS: Our first child was gifted a big set of wooden train tracks when he was born and through the years they provided endless hours of creative fun. We made these from 1/16” wood and they are preposterously tiny. Like, SO small.

The Books

Children’s books are just about our favorite things. We couldn’t resist highlighting some of our favorites. We have a particular love for Dave Santat books.

Once we got started recreating our children’s library in miniature, we had a hard time drawing the line. They have so many books, so we were only able to make a fraction of them for this scene.
