Long Farmhouse Kitchen (Full Details)

The kitchen of the Long Farmhouse was always going to be the biggest challenge. The room is really only accessible through the windows! We wanted to make a long wall kitchen and have the dining area and a coffee bar across the room.

The big tasks here were adding an additional window and perfecting the cabinets. We really wanted to do a two-color cabinet combo and chose Robb’s favorite deep blue for the lowers.

Upper Cabinets

We wanted the uppers to be a combination of open shelving and glass doors. It gives the room an airy appearance (well, so long as you fill the shelves with monochromatic pieces). We also designed some custom cabinet knobs and drawer pulls.

Countertops

Because we pulled off the original counters, we needed to make some new ones, and ended up loving the natural wood.

Range and Sink

Well, we really didn’t do enough on the range. It needed a full makeover, and we probably should have given it some new hardware, but alas. It got a new electric stovetop and that’s about it. The sink, on the other hand, got the full treatment. The previous one was pretty lackluster—shallow and small. So we got to work printing up a new apron sink and faucet. It meant cutting up the cabinet below to allow for the deeper sink. Which, meant we also had to make new cupboard doors. Totally worth it.

Dining Area

We love that this kitchen has enough space to allow for a full dining table. There’s also great light from all of the windows, so a wonderful place to sit down and peruse cookbooks.

Coffee Bar

Before we even attempted working on the rest of the kitchen, we installed the coffee bar. Actually, it may have been one of the very first parts of the house to be completed.

Cabinet Kit Bashing

Okay guys, here’s a little behind the scenes action. We got carried away with the cabinet “updates”. It usually starts out with, “We’ll just make a few little tweaks.”

Then somehow, hours later, we’ve not only removed all of the hardware and some of the decorative trim, but we’ve also pulled off the drawer fronts, filled in some shelves and are in the process of 3D printing an apron sink and staining new, custom wood countertops. It would have been more efficient to start from scratch, but it was fun anyway.
