Coastal Contemporary Bedroom Box

We’re so excited to share our coastal contemporary bedroom room box! This little slice of paradise features soothing neutral colors and relaxing touches that will make you feel like you're on vacation every day.

We wanted this room box to feel like a true retreat, so we made sure to include plenty of cozy textiles, like an extra soft rug, and upholstered bench and plenty of throw pillows.

The Room Box

We added board and batten to the exterior of the room box. You can find the full tutorial here. We then painted it with Sherwin Williams Drift of Mist.

The interior is painted in Satin Heirloom White by Rust-Oleum, with baseboards and french door in Satin Almond by Krylon.

For a little texture and detail, we added a sheet of Natural Stitch Stripe wallpaper to the back wall. You can find it in our shop in both peel and stick and digital download options.

The flooring is our Standard Width Light Ash, also available from our shop in both preprinted sheets and digital download options.

Furnishings

THE BED is definitely the star of this room box. The black wooden frame features a sleek, modern canopy that adds an element of elegant drama to the space.

For supreme coziness, we’ve dressed the bed in striped and white linens, piled it with pillows and topped it with a creamy throw blanket for ultimate snuggles.

THE RUG is an extra soft Scandi Fabric Rug, available if four sizes from our shop. We’ve used the largest, 8x10 inch size to make sure all of the area around the bed is warm and inviting.

BUNNY SLIPPERS are a must have for really relaxing around your bedroom retreat. You can find your own set in our shop in either large or small size.

NIGHTSTANDS are a necessity for any great bedroom space. We’ve been working on this design for awhile and finally included a drawer that would open and close.

THE BEDSIDE PLANTS include a potted succulent and topiary that we made years ago with mini wood flower pots.

BOOKS that calm and inspire are especially important to always have nearby. We’ve selected two of our top picks. Wild Creations by Hilton Carter guided us through caring for houseplants and inspired Robb to fill our home with so many green things. And Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer gently changed our entire perspective on practically everything. Read it when you are ready for some potential paradigm shifting.

THE BENCH design is one that we designed to use in past projects. It first appeared in the Grandmillennial Room Box and then again in the Mini Modern Holiday Farmhouse. But for this project, we wanted to change it up by having the subtle decorative trim and then adding some upholstery to the top for a softer feel.

HANDBAG placement was strategic. In reality, a bench at the base of our bed would end up becoming a clothing drop zone. But, since this room is just too zen for that, we’ll pretend only a handbag is dropped in this spot.

DESK selection was actually something that took us a minute. We wanted to pattern it after the full sized desk that currently resides in our living room. We also made sure to design it will both drawers that open and close. But we did go several rounds on the color choices. Full disclosure, the one in our living room is black.

THE CHAIR is something that we’ve had in the works for a bit. It is a bit more modern in style. Again, we tested it in several paint colors, and decided on the subtle contrast of the natural beige.

NOTEBOOKS AND PENCILS are for jotting down notes and ideas. Plus I’m always a sucker for a nice bundle of sharpened pencils. Maybe a notepad for writing a short letter. But let’s not get carried away. We resisted adding a laptop or anything more substantial or work related. This area should be a relaxing retreat. (You can download our free composition notebook printable here.)

ARTWORK over the bed was added to finish off the area with some calming colors and really transport you to a peaceful state of mind. We 3D printed the frame for this little print of a vintage oil painting.

THE MIRROR is another project that has been in the works for some time. It is crafted of so many layers of wood that have been glued together and painted. And while they are so tedious to craft, we just love the final result.

PLANTS really help finish off a space and make it feel more organic. Plus, in our actual spaces, the real plants make the space feel alive and healthy. Apparently it’s all that fresh O2?

Lighting

WALL SCONCES were a random find on Amazon. We’ve added them to our Amazon Storefront. We’re loving the little swing arms and that the light is neither too orange or blue.

THE CEILING LIGHT light we used is a pretty powerful battery push light that Robb found at our local Ace Hardware. We housed it in a 3D-printed scallop ceiling fixture.

DESK LAMP options are available as mix and match bases and shades from our shop. For this project, we selected a White Knobby Lamp base and paired it with one of our Natural Beige Fabric Shades then dropped in an LED battery light.
